Review of Silence (2017) by Ryan L — 22 Jan 2017
The beautiful and stunning filming of 17th century Japanese culture doesn't make up for the insufferable Christian propaganda that makes watching this film akin to attending a two and a half hour mass.
More like the "Passion of the Christ" than the more even-handed portrayal of missionaries in the 1986 "The Mission," this film flagellates the viewer with endless iconography and the noble suffering of Christians, while sugarcoating the, shall we say, mixed history of Christian indoctrination.
Even the attempts at objectivity in this film are tempered by the not-so-subtle caricatures of Japanese inquisitors hell bent on destroying the "good word.".
