Review of Silence (2017) by Stephen R — 27 Feb 2017
Silence is a slow and long masterpiece that owns many great performances from the likes of Adam Driver, Andrew Garfield, and Liam Neeson. About missionaries trying to spread Christianity in Japan where practice of the religion is punishable by death the film strays away from being to preachy and doesn't ever pick a side.
Centering in on Garfield's character we don't get to see much of Neeson and Driver, a surprise as I thought there would be more time split between the three. Instead we do get a nice surprise performance from Yosuke Kubozuka who plays one Japanese man that can't learn his lesson.
A story with all sorts of twists and turns alongside an atmosphere that perfectly goes with it, Silence is a very good, thought provoking film which begins and ends with the ominous sounds of bugs in the distance.
