Review of Silence (2017) by Mark D — 29 May 2017
This was a bit of a slog to get through, but I made it. I was curious when it first came out, which is why I finally decided to watch it.
At first it comes across as one of those low budget christian movies that are generally cheesy and bad. Ok, it actually feels this way through most of the film.
It can be pretty boring, and you never really jive with the 2 men who travel to japan to find their lost mentor/priest. Of course, they are also there to spread Christianity, which is apparently outlawed. Christians are persecuted for their beliefs and often tortured and killed.
Andrew Garfields character is strange in how they slowly portray him as if morphing into Jesus(Westernized version, of course) himself.
As an atheist I shake my head at the wasted lives given up for nothing. That being said, I do get why the poor and forgotten people would need something to believe in. Something to latch on to, and get them through the day.
The movie doesn't actually finish up the way you would expect.
I wonder when Japan finally stopped the Christian killing. I may have to look it up out of curiosity.
