Review of Silence (2017) by Deepak M — 15 Jul 2017
A profound exploration of the nature, depth, and resilience of religious belief, told through the harrowing saga of a jesuit priest's head-on collision with 17th century Japanese society. The starkness of its narrative style, with no excessive dramatization, and no maudlin sentimentality, blends fittingly with the starkness of Japan's landscape.
By depicting events without passing moral judgment, this film enables viewers with differing attitudes towards religious belief to draw completely different conclusions about what they witnessed. Overall, a superb movie.
