Review of Silence (2017) by Ronin D — 01 Dec 2017
Beautiful moving film. Scorsese's Silence roars with raw emotion without a soundtrack beating you senseless to move you to display the proper emotional response. Whether a viewer is religious or not this film is not about faith being right or wrong but about the inner struggle of those who believe in something. It's a good character study where there are no simple villains and heroes.
What is not brought up in the film or in the novel which adds weight to anti-christian Japanese authorities is the historical reality that no one in the film had the authority to seriously consider the missionary's arguments. By that time the Shogunate had completely turned against Christianity after the warnings of British pilot William Adams and the quasi-Christian revolt in Shimabara. This is why the authorities wanted the token gesture of submitting so they could relay that to the Shogun officials and avoid harsh punishment for failure.
