This is a very complex film. Dark and difficult, Scorsese does tell where 2 devout christians find that their savior he is not the only thing that must be sacrificed on the cross. This is 1 of the most subtle Christian films.
The viewer is taken into that depths of the personal and public struggles of the characters; the death of the one character that cannot sacrifice what he was taught about proselytizing the Japanese, and the discovery by the others of the toe hold christianity had and that it would require the sacrifice of how they were taught to approach it in order to not kill those rudimentary beginnings.
It was a powerful look at the subtlety and depth at how faith can mature. A director with a message in his heart and at the top of his craft. Fantastic.
