Review of Redemption (2013) by Tuomas R — 07 May 2014
So does anyone know why this film was called Redemption?
Because there's absolutely no redemption in the film...
It's also known as Hummingbird. For no good reason.
I think it having two titles says a lot about the uncertainty that went into its production...
This is just one of the many problems with this film.
The largest issue it has is that it tries so hard to be something more. Attempts in sending a message. But no one really knows what the message is. There's not enough to say. At least not enough to support any theory you may have. Unless, of course, you think really outside the box, which in that case, it's probably unintended.
Hummingbird / Redemption tries too hard to balance this thought-provoking, socially aware movie with a Statham movie (the tough guy / beat 'em up elements). What the film should have done is stick to the latter. Because it proved it couldn't be anything more despite its attempt. Which is still admirable, I'll give it that.
The only reason anybody should watch this film, if they were to at all, is for Jason Statham's performance. It's his best thus far. I realize that doesn't say much, but let me tell you it's a solid performance regardless all on its own. I was impressed, if I'm being honest. He had some great moments. He does enough acting to prove that he could carry a film on his own back as something more than just today's Jean-Claude Van Damme. The guy has it in him. And he did so without any direction. You can tell Jason is doing this character all by himself.
The film's characters are interesting, they are, in concept and theory. As well as its general story. But it's so poorly executed and the screenplay tries to shove all these other subplots, details, and ideas in that it becomes an unnecessary convoluted and sometimes offensive mess; coming right out of left field. I had to roll my eyes a handful of times.
Couple face palms too.
Don't see Hummingbird / Redemption. Unless you're curious of a solid Jason Statham performance. I'm glad I got to see him act, I really am.
Two mangos out of four.
