Review of Ages of Love (2011) by Domna K — 29 Apr 2012
So I may have come late to this trilogy and as a result may have been lost in the zone of unknowingness at times, but I felt betrayed by the whole thing, particularly the trailer, which smacked of romance and general comforting Italianess (plus Bellucci and de Niro are only part of one short story at the end of the film FYI!!).
But this turns out to be a slapstick comedy, which, granted, will provide some side-splitting moments, but on the whole, becomes an incomprehendable, confusing and chessy mess. Now not to be a cynical prick about it, (and I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that it's JUST a vehicle for de Niro to impress with his new-found ability to speak the mother language) and I did enjoy moments in it but it just doesn't endear me to cross the cultural divide and embrace the modernity of 'sexy' Italy right at this moment (I would gladly embrace Monica Bellucci anyday though!).
Having said that it will be popular no doubt.
