Review of Yi Yi (2000) by Dennis C — 22 Feb 2008
What a masterpiece from Edward Young. My friend told me about this movie long ago but I never knew how beautiful this humanistic film is. All the stories happened in contemporary Taipei city and Tokyo, and they are tied to one another.
The movie's tone is as level as its frames are carefully composed. It starts with a wedding (joyful but confused) and ends with a funeral (sad but clear). All the urban stories can be related to every one of us regardless of culture background.
Curiosity from a young mind, struggle from the teenagers, distrust, betray, confusion from the middle ages, and wisdom from the elder. As the movie poster shows that hidden message....... 'I CAN'T SEE WHAT YOU SEE'.
