Review of Wonder Wheel (2017) by Cheryl H — 07 Sep 2018
Winslet's performance is hauntingly accurate -- a barely recovering alcoholic so near breaking at any moment -- it reminded me a lot of Kate Blanchett's character in Blue Jasmine. This film is a classic Allen tragedy, with only the tiniest dash of comic irony (the innocent young people who wish for adventure and drama get crushed alive by actually experiencing it firsthand).
Winslet's character is sick, sad, tragic, menacing, pitiful. The contrast of the characters' tough lives with Coney Island's veneer of fun and frivolity makes it even darker.
