Review of Who's That Knocking at My Door (1968) by Nikolai E — 09 Jul 2009
It's not really a very good film, but in a way that the skill behind it is obvious, in the breathless yet completely natural performances, the expertly paced long takes, the use of music. Some things work and some things really don't, but I was surprised it's as coherent as it is when I learned it's really three different films spliced together out of convenience.
I think it got so much critical attention because it reminded everyone of some kind of French art house film that was solidly grounded in New York City, and the critics were anxious to grab hold of any American new wave auteur.
At any rate, the jump between this and Mean Streets is exponential.
