Review of White Material (2010) by Anuwat U — 04 May 2011
Claire Denis' most conventional film that I have seen follows a family of white french settlers who refuse to leave war-torn africa, even though everything around them is falling apart around them.
The film does an amazing job at creating this uneasy sense of dread. Its atmospheric and really full of tension as things just seem to keep getting worse and worse. Isabelle Huppert does a great job as the lead, the french woman, who is the most stubborn about leaving of anyone.
Honestly, she kinda annoyed me though and I found her character to be rather insane, considering the situation around her. As a whole this is a lesser Denis film mainly because the characters are not explored as well as they could be because of the story structure and need to keep the story moving; which is not very common for Denis.
Still a strong work which really captures the tumultuous savage beauty of africa, where everything is unstable.
