Review of White Material (2010) by Jane N — 13 Jul 2010
A bleak, relentlessly intense drama set in an unnamed African country gripped by violent political turmoil. Isabelle Huppert is excellent as Maria, the coffee plantation manager defiantly refusing to abandon her business as all around tell her that it's now far too dangerous to carry on, and increasingly bloody events confirm that view.
The tension and the threat of carnage is high throughout, but this is no action movie, and there's little heroism on display. 'White Material' is a character study about stubbornness, about a refusal or inability to move on from a way of life that has become untenable.
It makes grim, joyless viewing, but it's certainly powerful.
