Review of When We Were Kings (1996) by Matt W — 11 Nov 2007
Norman Mailer sadly died yesterday, and hearing about this on the news I was prompted to once again dig out this fabulous documentary. His witty and insightful musings on the Rumble In The Jungle are one of the things that make this such a great film.
But how could it be just that? When We Were Kings is a magnificent, pulsating drama with an absolutely stellar soundtrack and the plot of one of the most dramatic fairytale victories in sporting history, set in the midst of disctatorship, racism and the civil rights movement.
Muhammad Ali is simply irresistable, branding his personality irrevocably into your brain with his quick wit, overwhelming charisma and monumental fighting ability.
One to watch again and again.
