Review of What Price Hollywood? (1932) by Keith C — 14 May 2010
"What Price Hollywood?" laid the ground work for all versions of "A Star Is Born". George Cukor obviously had a story to tell. Constance Bennett stars as Mary Evans, a young waitress at the Brown Derby who sets her sights on the downward spiraling director Max Carey played by Lowell Sherman as her entrance into motion pictures.
This film gives you a glimpse of old Hollywood and how careers were molded. It tells the tale of a strong friendship, the devotion and love for the man who gave her the break she dreamed of. Great film for it's time.
If you love movies about Hollywood.... this is a great one to see. Note: Neil Hamilton (aka TV's Batman's Commissioner Gordan) plays Mary's husband Lonny Borden in this film.
