Review of We Were Here (2011) by Maarrk H — 03 Jun 2011
"The cemeteries of the world are full of indispensable men," runs De Gaulle's quote on the tragedies of warfare, yet 'We Were Here' makes a similarly unforgettable statement on the wrath of the AIDS pandemic on San Francisco's gay community.
What strikes hardest â" despite the numbers, over 16,000 dead in a single city during those years known as the epidemic â" is how truly beautiful all of these young men were, both inside and out.
Pulling together in ways not seen in queer culture before (or since, really), we took care of each other, fully giving meaning to our use of the term "family." 'We Were Here' looks back on nearly an entire generation wiped out, while the fight still wages on.
