Review of War Witch (2012) by Bill C — 09 Apr 2013
Komona's yellow Abercrombie tee-shirt reminds us of how conveniently and charitably we disengage from a sub-Saharan parallel universe of witchcraft, hallucinogens, child soldiers and Kalashnikov rifles.
Quebec based writer-director Kim Nguyen explores a life force so strong that even the darkest incarnation of moral poverty cannot suppress it. Kinshasa street-kid turned actor Rachel Mwanza quietly breathes life into the desperate Komona, a human tragedy that steadfastly refuses to happen.
Wonderfully restrained; easily one of the finest films of 2012.
