Review of Volver (2006) by Jason M — 30 Jan 2011
For 2006:
One of my favorite foreign films ever.
Peneople Cruz is at her best colliding once again with Pedro Almodovar.
The performances are sky-rocketing.
The setting in Spain adds finely to the vivid colors along with the storytelling.
It's also an amazing portrayal of the many challenges women face in the midst of family, love, corruption, forgiveness and rebirth.
The music is soothing and the characters shine so brightly.
But the real success of this movie is the subtle depiction of the bond between mother and daughter, different points of view conflict with one another and towards the end differences are set aside and in the end it's love that really counts when the characters depend on one another in order to perservere.
