Review of Vincere (2009) by Mikael K — 05 Aug 2010
A dramatic and nicely old fashioned way to tell the story of Mussolini' forgotten family. The film begins as a biography of young Benito Mussolini and a tale of his growth into a charismatic and aggressive political leader, but eventually shifts its focus on Ida Dalser and her and Mussolini's son Albino.
â??Vincereâ?? has a significant amount of historical appeal and the old fashioned feel in the excecution works for a while, but in the end the work feels a bit too much about form in the expence of real substance. Still this is a movie filled with that good old magic of a grand spectacle and offers a feeling of movie magic often absent in more obviously successful works.
Giovanna Mezzogiorno is phenomenal as Dalser who's life is completely destroyed by her embarrassing liaison with the dictator. She carries the film completely after the overpowering melodrama and heavy storytelling eventually lose their appeal.
