Review of Veronika Decides to Die (2005) by Adrian Z — 21 May 2010
3 out of 5 - As I haven't read Paulo Coelho's book, I can't compare how this film interpretation stacks up, although it should be a moot point anyway, as both mediums are different in what they can and can't do.
What can be said of the film, however, is that it is an appropriately moody, but ultimately uplifting drama. David Thewlis is interesting as the doctor who engages in unusual therapy and Sarah Michelle Geller puts in a difficult but competent performance as the title's suicidal character.
Balanced with the film's biggest flaws; lack of background on some key characters - i.e. Jonathan Tucker's, who eventually recovers all too quickly to be believable, and somewhat sagging pace, this remains a watchable drama.
