Review of Valhalla (1986) by Henrik S — 08 Apr 2009
A wonderful and tender tale of Nordic Mythology. Expect to find Thor, Loki, Giants, Sea Serpents and lots of met. The movie is quirky and off-beat and lacks a bit of classic "American" storyline and feels like a fable or a mythological tale, which makes sense after all. The movie also has some rather surreal moments which resemble the mastery of early Disney classics - A severed head playing chess (with living pieces) against the King of Gods anyone ? Class !
The movie was hard to come by and I watched it in Danish (with Eng Subs). The animation is spot-on and has much eye for detail with the odd hint towards Nordic Mythology's raunchy undertone.
Compared to most of Disney cartoons and the more recent output of Dreamworks and co, the movie feels very true and honest, like a granny's retelling of an ancient story and is very heartwarming.
I do highly recommend you pick up this movie should you find it on DVD or VHS. It is not an easy find but it's worth being on the lookout for.
