Review of Vagabond (1985) by Michael W — 27 Nov 2007
Let's face it, you have to shift gears to watch French films. There just aren't any car chases. Or if there are, or if there are gun fights, the film probably sucks! But if you shift down, or can, you will recognize this as a great film.
Ironically I think the vagabond girl does live by a rule, contra the title, at least one applied to others, a kind of Kantian categorical imperative that others should always do right by her without expecting or gettiing reciprocation or gratitude.
That sounds ridiculous but I know a number of intelligent people, usually they are women for some reason, who live by that principle or one like it! It didn't work for the vagabond though. Varda draws this theme out so well, it is a great study of morals and their rejection or at least incomprehension in the face of them.
