The 2010 World Cinema Audience Award winner deserves all the praise it's been getting. Peru's "Undertow" ("Contracorriente") is a ghost story like no other. It's about tradition, gender, masculinity, family, God, being gay, yes, but it's more than this.

At its heart, it questions the very things in life that weigh us down and literally, drown us--day by day, night by night, tear by tear. Writer/director Javier Fuentes-Leon's brilliant first feature film is that rare piece of cinema that knows what it wants and goes for it.

I only hope it will find the audience--perhaps, soon on Netflix?--it so easily deserves.
