Review of Umberto D. (1952) by Justine S — 25 Aug 2007
De Sica is quickly becoming one of my favourite filmmakers. Umberto D is en emotional look at an old man who doesn't have enough money from his pension, and needs to find a way to get extra money so he doesn't get evicted.
Abandoned by the rest of the world, his only friends are a pregnant maid and his pet dog. The film doesn't play out like a weeper though, as De Sica who is more famous for his comedy, makes it out to be like a Chaplin film.
Not that it is funny, but moreso tender and humanist. The film had me in tears throughout. The cinematography and performances are wonderful. A film everyone should see.
