Review of Trouble Every Day (2001) by Brent G — 04 Dec 2009
Not totally sure what to think of this, which I guess is a successful reaction, as Denis apparently likes to mess with her viewers and get them thinking. One one hand, this is affecting (especially those two sex scenes .
.. Jesus Christ), elegant, features terrific music, and has a great manipulation by Denis' warm eroticism giving way to, well, the opposite, by the end. On the other hand, Denis seems to lose focus and control about halfway through.
I think she perhaps went a little too horror-happy with the plot and the film loses a little subtlety, which I think was its strong point. The tension given by the music and the jolts of disorientation were fantastic, but those were lost once the vampire fucking settles in, and the movie just gets a little too ridiculous for my tastes.
For a horror movie, I suppose it's quite good, but I'd need to watch it again to understand a bit more about why Denis felt she had to go there.
