Review of Trishna (2011) by Danijel J — 23 Sep 2012
It's a perplexing decision to transpose Hardys much sinned against heroine to India. The vibrancy and human density of India are used to oppressive effect, and the location filming makes the most of some stunning scenery.
The insinuation that Indias attitude to class and gender politics parallels 19th century England may be fair enough, but I'm in murkier waters trying to unmuddle the part of the spoilt post-colonial Brit of Indian ethinicity playing the vicious rogue.
A comment on the ongoing rape and pillage of India by a new breed of spoilt next-generationers, driven by a sense of privelege like the Rajahs of old?
