Review of Transylmania (2009) by Joshua R — 27 Apr 2010
*1/2 (out of four).
There are a couple of real laughs that slip in on a rare occasion, but that's about it. "Transylmania" tries its best to be a comic spoof and a wacky cult hit. But it is painfully obvious that it is trying too hard. The result is a film that has zero focus and is all over the place in its stupidity.
A group of undersexed and overly horny college kids decide to move to a rural college for a semester in Romania. Once they arrive they wonder a bit when their first class teaches them about slaying vampires. The confusion grows when one of the guys also happens to look exactly like the head vampire.
The film tries borrowing from the best. It is something like Mel Brooks might have done in the 1970's, but without the laughs. It also borrows from the Marx Brothers, directly lifting the comic mirror segment from "Duck Soup". But it here, again, it misses the wit and originlity it needs.
