Review of Topkapi (1964) by Ice R — 01 Jun 2009
Rififi is amazing. If you only watch one Jules Dassin heist movie it should be Rififi. But if you feel inclined to see something a little lighter in the same vein this is it. Topkapi is Rififi as a comedy with Peter Ustinov, Turkish security forces and drunk chefs.
It's full of subtle little chuckles interspersed with the awesomeness and tension loaded scenes from the robbery. Naturally the theft sequence doesn't and probably couldn't match up to Rififi but I was impressed that Dassin's "Hollywood" version was so entertaining without being a sell-out.
Ustinov won the Oscar for best supporting actor too giving the film some credibility.
