Review of To Be or Not to Be (1983) by Michael F — 07 Sep 2007
Lubitsch is the best! Accept no substitutes -- no, not even Mel Brooks (though there are 2 comic-gem moments in the remake). The original version is a near-perfect film -- still incredibly grim and edgy for a comedy (almost every joke is a death joke) 65 years later.
Every performance is perfectly calculated, and the timing - particularly of Jack Benny's takes - is breathtaking.
