Review of This Movie Is Broken (2010) by Matthew C — 16 Jun 2010
This movie had a lot of good and a lot of bad, all things considered. It's important to know going in, IMO, that the narrative is very, very weak -- and honestly is hardly needed at all. Ultimately not very well written.
But that really didn't matter because the movie was about Broken Social Scene and their spectacular free concert of last summer. Superbly captured, you're easily drawn into the vibe to experience the friendship and camaraderie that flows within the band.
The film is also filled with great, honest shots of Toronto that invoke warm feelings of nostalgia. Good stuff. It is just so unfortunate that the story itself fails so miserably. Dammit. And the end? Come on, are you serious? Fail.
