Review of Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould (1993) by Peter A — 25 Apr 2009
Glenn Gould was a prodigy, yes, but none of his ideas were particularly extraordinary. What was extraordinary about Glenn Gould, what this film captures extraordinarily well, is the way in which he managed live according to those ideas: a rigid existence in spite of eccentricity.
In the exploration of that theme we also find the ways in which he failed to do that very same thing, which is ultimately the tragedy of his story. Its all there, his airs and self-deceptions, his deep humility simultaneous to overweening prideful displays, his obvious genius and less obvious humanity.
And, hey... form following function=yay!
