Review of Their Finest (2017) by Amanda C — 15 Mar 2018
One of the best films of 2017 - achingly funny, poignant, romantic, Gemma Arterton;s performance as a female scriptwriter rewriting and then crafting propaganda films is her first serious role since Tess of the d'Urbervilles, and she does it beautifully.
Bill Nighy's tuns as washed-up actor superb, Sam Clafin hides his good looks behind specs and a sneer but in the end convinces as the right man. Above all, this is one of the few good portrayals of what writing itself feels like.
Marvellous film - should have won a BAFTA.
