Review of The Story of Adèle H. (1975) by Kevin D — 05 Sep 2012
A triumph! Filmed simply and naturally, this movie is a showcase for the beautiful Isabelle Adjani in the powerhouse title role. Truffaut always got gorgeous women to be in his movies. She brought her all in every scene. As a result, she was the resilient glue that held the movie together. The sets feel completely authentic and it was nice to see Truffaut explore a (true!) story where a romance does not have a happy ending. This movie was a great exploration of loneliness and heart-wrench.
The Story of Adele H just feels like a great movie while you're watching it. You know you're watching a passion project the entire time (I believe Truffaut took 2 years off before he made it). This is certainly one of Francois Truffaut's best movies.
