Review of The Square (2017) by Wayne M — 10 Mar 2018
The Square lives up to its billing as the Palme d'or winner at Cannes in 2017. It's a bold and daring film that has a lot to say and says it with biting humour and smart dialogue. From the Danish director Ruben Ostlund the film is set in Stockholm at a major modern art museum curated by Christian, a man concerned with the world at large but also with himself.
When a major exhibition called 'The Square' is set to open, a series of events occur that set his life into turmoil. This film is darkly funny and beautifully observed, it requires many mental gymnastics to keep up with it but the payoff is well worth it.
An excellent cast ads to the overall pleasure. The film has many things to say about art. money, sex and fame. A cerebral commentary on the world we live in a very entertaining package.
