Review of The Reader (2008) by Sandy K — 04 Feb 2012
Brilliant acting, with a riveting examination of some horrific moral complexities in the aftermath of the fall of the Nazis. Kate Winslet earned her Oscar here. The viewer can't completely sympathize with her character, knowing her guilt.
The desperation of her affair with the boy and his devastating realization of her role in the Holocaust reveal two characters that are utterly, painfully closed off and alone. Thought-provoking and memorable, with no easy answers or trite absolutions.
Yet it ends on a wistful note of hope... for which I was grateful after so much sorrow!
