Review of The Old Guard (2020) by Compi24 — 12 Jul 2020
For many, "Hard Boiled" represents the gold standard of action filmmaking. After finally watching it, I can totally see what everyone's talking about. This is a ruthless, rip-roaring tirade through Hong Kong's underworld, spearheaded by John Woo's trademark aesthetic and some powerhouse performance work from both Chow Yun-Fat and Tony Leung.
Much to my surprise, the action in this isn't actually "wall-to-wall." In fact, the second act features a surprising amount of necessary build-up and downtime. However, when the set pieces are pulled out of the wardrobe, this movie wears them like a warm glove, with the final act really containing some of my most favorite bits.
It's violent, snarky, wholly memorable and absolutely worth a look.
