Even with Donnie Yen's fantastic martial art skills, especially with authentic ancient weaponry, this movie falls short of being a martial-arts beauty seen in Ip man or being an epic movie seen in Red Cliff.
Although it has solid acting and well crafted real fighting, the lack of substance in the plot, along with the abuse of slow sentimental scenes, The Lost Bladesman does not achieve the glory it has aimed for.
It is entertaining, but it does not represent the might of the genre, as hard as it tries.
