Review of The Last Word (2008) by Andrew B — 23 Jan 2008
For the first half of the film, I was not sure that I liked it so much. However, Ray Romano's performance kept me enthralled and entertained whenever he was present, as he is undoubtedly the funniest and probably best part of this movie.
Wes Bentley and Winona Ryder had decent performances, but in my opinion not enough to carry the full weight of the film. The themes explored by the characters I think became the most interesting and significant during the last third of the film; I do think that director Geoff Haley did a successful job of bringing a lighter, comedic tone to the film which dealt with such serious issues such as assisted suicide.
The ending was pretty satisfying for what was dished out during the final conflicts the characters faced, while still remaining believable and wrapped the film up in a bit of a lighter package, considering the themes that were explored.
