The Invisible Boy (1957) -- [4.0] -- A boy befriends Robbie the Robot (of "Forbidden Planet" fame) and the two try to stop a supercomputer from taking over the world. The title comes from a subplot involving an invisibility potion Robbie conconcts.
The movie is a hodge podge of story elements, but things actually come into focus toward the end. For a '50s family film, you could probably do worse.
