Review of The Grey Zone (2001) by Wesley B — 16 Jan 2008
This is an exceptionally powerful film about the near-impossible navigation of personal morality in the living hell of Auschwitz. The title "The Grey Zone" is about the moral gray area that ensues.
How can one balance personal survival and the survival of others in such a place? These are the tough questions the film asks. This is not a film that cheapens or sentimentalizes the Holocaust beyond need.
No little girls in red dresses in this one. Just a very stark, ingeniously written, directed, and acted film. I think the conclusion to this film is absolutely heartbreaking and captures the beauty of dying gracefully as well as the fragility of human life so very poignantly.
