Review of The Great Santini (1979) by Byron B — 16 Oct 2008
Despite its near-universal praise, I can't say I enjoyed this film. Duvall delivers an amazing performance, and that's the strength of this movie. But there's this really cringe-inducing subplot of Santini's son and the maid's son becoming friends, and then this really bad 70's racial aggression thread that seems totally out of place.
Am I jaded? Probably. But maybe if the middle of this movie were excised and the first and third acts were sewn together... just maybe we would've ended up with a stronger, more focused film.
