Review of The Great Ecstasy of Robert Carmichael (2005) by Simon C — 29 Aug 2008
Technically astute but largely irresponsible film-making. If you want a film to culminate in an ending that is unwatchable (I could fast-forward; cinema-goers would have to sit through it), you need a clear, logical message and a resolution of some kind that leaves the audience with some gained knowledge or insight cf.
A Clockwork Orange, Funny Games etc. It's no good playing about with your teen devils and ultra-violence, your crude characterisation and Kubrick/Loach homage unless you give some thought to what you want to say.
It made me angry and disturbed me; I could go to A & E in Stevenage on a Saturday night and feel the same - no art, no script, no craft. Pathetic. Fuck you and your fucking film.
