Review of The Gleaners and I (2000) by Rob L — 26 Mar 2010
A wonderful film in that it's quirky for certain and the French underclass depicted an exceedingly rum bunch, but also because it raises important questions about waste and the irresponsibility of western society in this regard.
Veteran Agnes Varda tours contemporary France in search of those who make a living from left over food and left over objects. It's amazing that sumptuous loaves of seeded bread, bright sprigs of parsley and apples aplenty can be found at the end of a market day and half inched to satisfy the hungry stomach of a resourceful scavenger.
The Law is seen to assent and owners are cool about the appropriation of unwanted property. How perhaps we ought to live.
