Review of The Four Times (2010) by Matthew E — 28 Feb 2012
Poetic telling of man and nature in a silent film sharing the story of a goat herder and his herd in a remote part of rural Italy. Through unique storytelling and intelligent use of cinematic grammar, a simple, small film takes on the big questions of life.
The hypothesis is that to understand ourselves we must understand the four parts of life - human, animal, mineral, vegetable. As the film progresses , human moves to the background and nature comes to the fore as the mans spirit invades goat and tree, then finally the screen is filled with grey charcoal.
We are being reminded through fable, religion, landscape , spirituality and personification of animals that humankind is not necessarily the only consciousness on our planet, and that's rather a beautiful message.
