Review of The First Grader (2010) by Dickie L — 13 Nov 2011
There's no doubt the real life story of the oldest primary school student in the world is inspirational, but whether it's a complex and dynamic enough story to warrant a feature film is debatable.
The political history of the titular Kenyan character adds some well needed subtext, but one wishes the plight of his fellow students and his relationship to them had been further developed. The film looks beautiful, although the constant postcard images and particularly the saccharine Singapore Airlines type music is quite off-putting.
