Review of The Fall of the House of Usher (1928) by Ethan Y — 25 Nov 2008
This film feels very sophisticated for 1928, but I know that part of that feeling comes from seeing it played back at the proper speed. the acting, while surreal, isn't herky-jerky or posed in the traditional silent way.
I can see how welles was heavily influenced by this film when creating the vast interiors for citizen kane's xanadu. the editorial style is very effective, and haunting.
