Review of The Duke of Burgundy (2015) by Stanley F — 06 Mar 2015
This is a most interesting film, and a good foil to the Fifty Shades reviewed below.
It looks at a world peopled only by women, taking the roles of masculine and feminine , and cleverly crosses the gender barrier without mentioning it.
The sexual stuff is done very intelligently - you think you might be going to see a film about lesbian sado-masochistic sex, but what you actually get is tastefully constructed textures, light-motifs, relationship tension, an aching sense of fin-de-siecle.
It's a sad, beautiful film, and I recommend it.
