Review of The Decline of Western Civilization (1981) by Tony U — 12 Jun 2007
This movie truly serves as an important musical documentary of the history of early 80s punk in Los Angeles. What makes this movie compelling is about the poverty of these punk bands that are now considered to be some of the primary influences of Los Angeles Punk and of Punk and New Wave in General.
It is filled with hilarious interviews with punk musicians, producers, bar owners, and fans of punk offering a wide spectrum of thoughts behind the rational behind music that to some, seems to be nothing but noise. This documentary gives voice and places an importance to the contribution of a punk rocker's effort the art of music.
Many great Los Angeles punk bands like The Circle Jerks, Alice Bag Band, Black Flag, Fear (flea of the Red Hot Chili Pepers used to be the bassist of this band), Catholic Discipline and The Germs (the singer committed suicide).
One of my 5 all time favorite documentaries.
