Review of The Boy Friend (1971) by Mark A — 30 Dec 2011
I went along with half of London to the BFI last night to see Ken Russell's The Boy Friend as part of their MGM Musicals season. I saw it once on tv many, many years ago and all I remembered about it was that it was very long.
I can report that it still seems very long but on the big screen it is beautiful and thrilling. There so many big, doey eyes it looks as if they were casting for a Keane painting (amazing). Twiggy is good, but the scenes are (literally) stolen by the supporting cast which includes Georgina Hale, freaky Tommy Tune, Barbara Windsor and MY MP Glenda Jackson (uncredited).
It is quite funny, too. I hope the BFI shows more Ken Russell in 2012.
