Review of The Birth of a Nation (2016) by Ralph L — 07 Oct 2016
There are a few movies in cinema history that transcend their time periods and become universal hymns to human freedom. Some of them are "All Quiet On the Western Front (1931),"The Great Dictator (1940),"Spartacus (1960), "The Way We Were" (1973) "Reds" (1981), "Malcolm X" (1992), "Schindler's List" (1993), Life is Beautiful (1999). "Birth of a Nation" joins that list. It is not just the best film of the year, but the most stirring and courageous film of the 21st century.
In my youth in the 60s and 70s, I dreamed that movies could change the world for the better. In my old age, I am not so sure that this is possible, but I am glad to know that there are wonderful people like Nat Parker who still hold that dream.
